Travelling to Val Thorens

Val Thorens

Walking around the village is easy enough, snow and ice not withstanding, as it is mostly car-free.  A 15-minute walk in any direction from the church, in the centre, will take you to the edge of the village.

Unload your bags at the entrance to “Résidence Les Névés” and take your car to one of the car parks.  There are free shuttle buses to bring you back to the doorstep.  The nearest covered car park (P0) is 200m from the entrance of “Les Névés”.

If you arrive early you can store your bags in the Sports Centre, collect your skis from the hire shop and head off to the slopes.  (Package holiday groups changeover on Saturdays, leaving the slopes quiet and spacious for you.)

Moûtiers

There is only one road into Val Thorens and it starts here.  Drivers will have enjoyed dual carriageway all the way through France but the last 37km (one hour) from Moûtiers to Val Thorens is much more interesting and curvaceous!

The bus and train stations are next to each other and it is easy enough to move your luggage from one to the other.  There is a regular bus service, or hire a taxi to take you up the hill.

Trains to Moûtiers

The overnight train from Paris is a great combination ticket: travel, accommodation and one or two days extra skiing.  From the UK do not limit yourself to researching the “ski train” from London.  Think about travelling to Paris to connect with the Paris–Moûtiers train.  (Tip: once you have the basic journey details check each section for alternative times and potentially better price overall.) There are other daily trains and TGV into Moûtiers.

Fly to local airports (Chambéry, Grenoble, Lyon, Geneva)

Plan your journey to land in Chambéry-Savoie, Grenoble-Isère, Lyon Saint-Exupéry or Geneva Cointrin airport.  Chambéry is the closest and is well serviced by the budget airlines during the main ski season.  Bus, taxi or car hire from all of these airports will take you to Val Thorens. Outside of the main season Geneva is the best serviced airport.
